We get this question daily. You never use box springs with bunk beds. Box springs will push the person in the bunk bed higher than the safety rail will allow for the safety rail to be effective. What all our home based woodworkers use is a slat system that we have developed. This allows for the safety rail to be effective while at the same time permits our bunk beds to be rated to hold over 300lbs. on each bed.
